Scrap Wood Wall Art Tutorial

In the world of DIY and woodworking, there’s something incredibly satisfying about turning leftover materials into a stunning piece of art. Especially after you’ve been telling yourself for years that you’ll use the scraps piling up in the garage (hahahaha). In this tutorial, I’ll guide you through the process of creating a scrap wood wall art using walnut scraps. With a few simple steps, you can transform those discarded pieces into a beautiful statement piece for your home that’s easy on your wallet and the environment!

Materials Needed:

  1. Wood scraps (I used walnut, but you can make your own spin on it)
  2. Backer board (I used a 1×2)
  3. Wood glue
  4. Nails (or alternative wall-mounting hardware like a french cleat or screws)
  5. Polyurethane or paint of your choice (optional)
  6. Foam brush

Step 1: Gather Your Walnut Scraps

Take a look in your garage, and if you’re anything like me, you’ll find a stash of scraps waiting to be repurposed. I had been saving up walnut scraps specifically, but you can use any species of wood for this project! These offcuts can vary in size and shape, adding a unique character to your wall art.

Step 2: Cut the Walnut Boards

Carefully measure and cut each walnut board into a variety of lengths. This step allows you to play with different dimensions, creating an interesting and dynamic arrangement for your wall art. I chose a combination of lengths between 7″-14″. I used a miter saw to cut each piece to length, but you can use numerous saws for this step.

Step 3: Arrange the Boards

Lay out all the cut walnut boards until you’re satisfied with the arrangement. Experiment with different configurations to find a pattern that resonates with your aesthetic preferences. I chose to have my boards taper off on each side- so the longest boards are in the middle of the piece, and the shortest board are on each end.

Step 4: Adhere the Boards to the Base

Once you’re happy with the arrangement, apply wood glue to the base board and press each board onto the base board. Ensure a secure bond by pressing down firmly. Allow the glue to dry completely.

Optional Step: Finish or Paint

If you desire, add a finish or paint to enhance the visual appeal of your scrap wood wall art. Choose a color or finish that compliments your existing decor. I opted for a clear polyurethane to make the natural walnut grain POP. I applied this with a foam brush.

Step 5: Attach to the Wall

After the wood glue has dried, it’s time to display your creation! Use nails to attach the base board to the wall, making sure it’s secure. Alternatively, you can opt for a French cleat or screws for a different mounting method.

With just a few simple steps, you can turn discarded wood scraps into a piece of wall art. This DIY project not only reduces waste but also adds a unique and personalized touch to your living space. Get creative, experiment with different arrangements, and enjoy the satisfaction of turning humble wood scraps into a stunning focal point in your home.
