Easy DIY Side Table Makeover

Thrift stores are treasure troves for those willing to put in a little effort and creativity. In June of 2022, I stumbled upon two hexagon-shaped side tables at my local thrift store, priced at just $10 each. Despite their worn appearance, I saw potential in these pieces to become statement pieces. Armed with determination and a few essential materials, I embarked on a DIY journey to breathe new life into these tables.

Materials Used

  1. Orbital Sander
  2. Sandpaper
  3. Detail Sanding Sponge
  4. Primer
  5. Cabinet Enamel Paint (Shade: “Deep Emerald” by Glidden)
  6. Small roller
  7. Small paint brushes
  8. Canvas Drop Cloth

Step 1: Sanding Down the Wood

The first step in transforming these tables was to smooth out the imperfections and take off the original stain/finish. Using an orbital sander with 120 grit sandpaper, I carefully sanded down the wood, removing any imperfections and old finishes. I then used this detail hand sander to get the grooves the orbital sander couldn’t reach.

Step 2: Priming the Tables

Priming is essential for ensuring that the paint adheres well to the surface and provides a smooth finish. I applied a coat of primer evenly across both tables, allowing it to dry completely before proceeding to the next step. This step acts as a foundation for the paint and enhances its durability.

Step 3: Painting with Personality

With the tables prepped and primed, it was time to add a pop of color. I opted for a vibrant teal hue called “Deep Emerald”. I painted each table with a mini roller kit, ensuring full coverage and smooth application. Then I made sure to get all of the details with these small paint brushes.

Step 4: Finishing Touches

Once the paint dried, I inspected the tables for any touch-ups or imperfections. After ensuring a flawless finish, make sure to let the tables cure completely before placing them in their new home. They should be dry to the touch in 24 hours, but I would wait a couple of weeks before placing anything on top of them for the enamel paint to fully cure.

Conclusion

With a little creativity and some basic materials, I was able to revamp these side tables into fun and functional decor elements. Next time you come across neglected pieces at your local thrift store, don’t hesitate to unleash your personal style and give them a second chance to shine. Who knows what treasures you might discover and transform into unique statement pieces for your home!
