Easy DIY Penny Art
I wanted to add some copper details to the laundry room (on a budget) with an art project… what better way to accomplish that than with pennies?! This project takes virtually no skill and very little supplies.
This is what you’ll need:
Materials
- Pennies
- Hot Glue Gun + Glue Sticks
- Picture Frame of your style and size choice (I used a 16×20 frame)
- Black paint
- Brush of your choice (I used this brush to paint my frame backer black)
1. Sort Your Pennies + Prep Your Backer
I sorted through my pennies and organized them from shiny to…not so shiny. This is the part of the project that took the longest amount of time for me since I was going for an ombre look. Depending of how you want the design to look, you can put more or less time into this step!
While you’re sorting through your pennies, make sure to paint the backer of your frame black to make the pennies stand out! I used this mini roller to easily and quickly apply a coat of black paint to the backer of the frame.
2. Layout Your Design
I definitely recommend laying out the pennies in the pattern you want prior to the glue up. Then you won’t end up in a situation where you have to put a penny with the wrong patina somewhere. You will thank your future self if you stay organized on this step haha!
3. Glue Pennies
Once I had my pennies organized in rows from lightest to darkest, I began gluing the pennies to the backer with a hot glue gun. I recommend hot glue because it peels right off the pennies so you don’t have to worry about damaging them permanently.
4. Admire Your Art!
Because the pennies make this piece a little heavy, I recommend using hardware rather than sticky tape or command strips to hang the frame. I simply used a nail and the hanger that came attached to the back of my picture frame.
