DIY Fringe Backdrop Tutorial (under $30)!

Are you looking for a inexpensive way to create a fun backdrop for a special occasion? Look no further than this DIY fringe backdrop tutorial!

In June 2022, I made a fringe backdrop for one of my best friend’s bachelorette party. It was a retro disco theme so I wanted to make a photoshoot backdrop to pair with a silver/disco theme balloon garland. I loved this DIY project because it was so easy to create, pack and travel with to the airbnb and it can be used over and over again!

In this blog post, I’ll take you through the step-by-step process of creating your own.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  1. Garden Netting
  2. String
  3. Scissors
  4. Plastic tablecloths (Here’s the ones I purchased: rose gold metallic, peach, hot pink, silver metallic, orange)
  5. Ruler or measuring tape
  6. Optional: balloons for a garland (here’s the silver balloons I purchased)

Step 1: Prepare the Base and Cut Your Strings

Start by cutting the garden netting into your desired size and shape for the backdrop. It can be rectangular, square, or even a custom shape like a heart or star. I chose to make mine so that it was large enough for the bachelorette party to take group photos in front of, but sizing is totally up to you!

I cut the garden netting to 6 ft. across by 8 ft. tall. I then cut 4 pieces of string in 6 ft. lengths. Each fringe piece is 4 ft. in length, so once they are tied onto the string they are 2 ft. So, my plan was to have 4 strings, each 2 ft. by 6ft.

Step 2: Measure and Cut the Fringe Strips

Using your ruler, mark out the desired size of strips on the plastic tablecloths. The width of the strips will determine the thickness of the fringe, so choose a width that suits your preference. I chose to make the strips the same width as my ruler so I didn’t have to actually mark out any lines. Instead, I could just cut along the ruler. The more strips you cut, the fuller your backdrop will be.

Step 3: Tie the Fringe Strips to String

Starting at one end of the string, start slip knotting the plastic tablecloth strips around the string. If using different colors, you can decide how many strips you want per bunch! Repeat this process, working your way across the string, until the string is fully covered. I used 4 pieces of string that were 6 ft. in length to cover my garden netting backdrop! Each strip was 24″ in length so they covered the 8 ft. height I wanted.

Step 4: Attach the string to the garden netting (optional)

This part is optional depending on whether you want to create fringe garland or backdrops. Since I was creating a backdrop, I then tied the 4 strings of fringes to the garden netting that was cut to the size of backdrop I wanted (8ft. tall, 6 ft. wide). Then, I could use command hooks to hook onto the garden netting backer and it was all one piece!

Step 5: Hang and Enjoy!

Your fringe backdrop is ready to be displayed! Determine the best method for hanging based on your backdrop’s size and weight. You can use removable adhesive hooks, nails, or attach it to a freestanding frame. Find a prominent spot where it can shine and become the focal point of the room or event.

Whether it’s for a birthday party, wedding, or any themed event, this fringe backdrop tutorial will help you achieve impressive results. So, grab your supplies, get creative, and enjoy the process of crafting your very own fringe backdrop!
