Transforming a room doesn’t have to break the bank. In January 2023, my friend and I took on a fun DIY project to revamp our friend’s nursery, and the results were nothing short of amazing….and it only cost $5!! With a simple yet effective technique, we were able to create a modern herringbone-style design that added a touch of personality and charm to the room. In this blog post, I’ll walk you through our easy DIY process and how you can replicate it in your own space.

Here’s the Materials You’ll Need

The Inspiration

Our friend was expecting her first child, and we wanted to surprise her with the accent wall she wanted in the nursery without spending a fortune…The wallpaper that was our inspiration would’ve been over $500! So for a more budget-friendly option, we brainstormed ideas and landed on using sharpies instead of paint to create the pattern.

The DIY Process

  1. Preparation: We began by prepping the wall, ensuring it was clean and smooth. Then we painted the wall white! If your walls are already white (or the color you want) skip this step! Next, we gathered our supplies, which included painter’s tape, sharpies, rulers, and got to work.
  2. Taping the Wall: Using painter’s tape, we marked off sections on the wall, spacing them approximately six inches apart. This step was crucial in creating the herringbone pattern to ensure straight clean lines across the wall.
  3. Drawing the Lines: With the wall taped off, we grabbed our sharpies and rulers and started drawing slanted lines within each section. The key here was to maintain consistency with the angle by starting with a speed square and use the ruler for spacing to achieve a cohesive look.
  4. Removing the Tape: Once the lines were drawn, we carefully peeled off the painter’s tape, revealing the crisp edges of our herringbone pattern. This moment was incredibly satisfying and marked the completion of the main phase of our DIY project.
  5. Finishing Touches: To add a personal touch to the nursery, we incorporated small details such as curtains, and a plush area rug. These finishing touches tied the room together and enhanced the overall ambiance.

The herringbone pattern added depth and visual interest to the nursery, creating a focal point without overpowering the rest of the nursery decor! Our friend was thrilled with the outcome, and her cute lil babe has an equally cute room to call her own.

With a little creativity and some basic supplies, you can completely transform a space with this easy DIY project. Whether you’re decorating a nursery, bedroom, or any other room in your home, don’t be afraid to unleash your creativity and embark on your own DIY journey.
