DIY Mountain Nursery Mural

Welcoming a new member into your family is a momentous occasion! One of the most exciting ways to personalize your nursery is by adding a mural to one of the walls. I had so much fun creating this mountain mural for my nephew’s nursery. It is a great project to make any nature inspired/woodland theme nursery come to life!

In this blog post I’ll take you step by step through the process to create your own.

First, here’s a list of materials I used to pull this off.

Material List

Design Mock-Up

First, I drew the design on my iPad using procreate. You can make your design as simple or intricate as you’d like! Here, the mountains were easily to paint, but the trees took a lot of time and patience.

Projecting + Tracing the Design Outline

Once I had the design finalized with my sister-in-law, I used a projector to project the design onto the wall. Because the room was too small, wasn’t able to get the entire design on the wall at one time, so I ended up freehanding where the projector didn’t reach.

I used a colored pencil in the same color family as the paint to trace the outline of the mountains and trees.

Time for Paint!

After tracing the outline of the mountains, it was time to start painting! I bought Behr Dynasty sample paints in each of the five colors which worked out great. Sample paint sizes allow you to get way more variation in color without having to purchase a quart or gallon of each. I used a mini roller for the areas with a bigger surface area, and then used a variety of smaller brushes for the lines and details.

Aaaaaaand then I painted forever. In total this took me about 26 hours. If it weren’t’ for the amount of detail in the trees, the mountains alone could easily be completed in a day.

In case you are curious what colors I chose, here’s the breakdown from the lightest to darkest shade:

  • Ice Sculpture by Behr
  • Ash Blue by Behr
  • Half Sea Fog by Behr
  • Norwester by Behr
  • Norwegian Blue by Behr
  • Whale Gray by Behr

Here’s the final look! What do you think?
