Furniture Flip: Unveiling the Hidden Beauty of an $18 Dresser

In this blog post, we are talking all about my $18 Dresser makeover! One random afternoon, while perusing my local thrift store, I stumbled upon a diamond in the rough—a dresser with this amazing dental trim detail. Despite being in *rough* shape, I saw the potential for a remarkable transformation. The $18 price tag sealed the deal, and I eagerly brought it home! But first, here’s the materials and tools I used for this project.

Here’s What You’ll Need

Upon closer inspection, it became clear that the dresser’s condition required a paint job rather than a stain due to the condition of the wood. To achieve a flawless finish, I started by using Citristrip to remove the existing paint. This eco-friendly and effective stripping agent removed the top layers of product which cut down the sanding significantly.

After stripping, I dedicated time to sanding the dresser to ensure a smooth surface for the upcoming paint job. This step is crucial for achieving a professional-looking finish and ensuring that the new paint adheres properly.

With the dresser now a blank canvas, I applied a high-quality bonding primer to create a solid foundation for the paint. This step not only enhances the durability of the final finish but also ensures that the colors pop vibrantly.

For the paint color, I opted for a classic enamel paint in the same color of my built in entryway bench! The dresser’s new coat brought it to life, and the transformation was complete!

To preserve the dresser’s charm, I decided to keep the original hardware. However, I wanted to give it a fresh look. Enter Rub ‘n Buff in the color “Autumn Gold”—a brilliant choice for achieving a warm copper finish. Applying this metallic wax to the hardware added a touch of warmth and tied the entire piece together.

Taking on a furniture flip is a rewarding experience, turning a neglected thrift store find into a cherished piece of furniture. With a bit of elbow grease, creative vision, and the right materials, I was able to breathe new life into this dresser…on a  budget!
